Thanks To You, We Donated 435 Pairs of Shoes!

On Monday December 13, 2021 I headed to Society for Community Organisation (SoCO) in Sham Shui Po with my family to purchase shoe vouchers for children living in extreme poverty. This was the 7th year that we have supported SoCO in their Christmas Giving efforts.

Thanks to all of you, we were able to raise enough to purchase 435 shoe vouchers. Thanks to you, 435 children can purchase a pair of shoes and go to school with dignity!

Hundreds of children and their families still live in caged homes and wood-partitioned cubicles. Many of them struggle for survival. Parents push academics on their children as a way out. Each year, as Christmas rolls around, SoCO asks the children what they want for Christmas and hundreds of them only ask for one thing — a brand new pair of school shoes.

I’m not sure if you know this, but there is a local superstition about gifting a pair of shoes to someone. For this reason, the request of over 1000 children is an unmet one. We have found a way to bypass the superstition and we purchase gift vouchers for the children so that they can go to the store and pick out the pair of shoes that they like.

The needs of these communities are great and in 2022 we will be increasing our service offering, providing wellbeing support to single mothers and the hundreds of neglected elderly living in poverty. Your continued support would be most welcome as we embark on a new journey to look after our city’s most forgotten.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you again for your continued support.

The Society for Community Organization (SoCO) was formed in 1971 by a group of clergymen and people who cared for Hong Kong’s development and campaigned for a fair and just social system. Through the promotion of civil rights and the organization of the affected people, they promoted respect for those people’s rights and equality for all members of society.
